Casework Management and Decision Making

Introduction

Welcome to our eighth block of learning in this homelessness course. This block covers case work decision making and the management of cases. Participants will learn all aspects of how to gather and record information and use this information to make decisions under what is called public law decision making.   

This block will help you will learn the golden rules for making homelessness decisions under the public law requirements as well as the skills that will help you manage your casework better using a client centred approach working collaboratively with applicants.

We will also consider the importance of information gathering and effective case note recording and documentation in areas such as housing history, financial information, support needs and data protection.

The Unit should take 4-5 hours to complete, with 6 hours of follow-up readings.

At the end of the Block there is an Assessments to test your understanding of how to award a Duty. The assessment is made up of 40 randomly generated yes/no questions. The pass mark is 70 per cent. This means that 28 of the 40 questions must be answered correctly. Once the assessment has been passed, you will receive a certificate showing your accomplishment in your personal dashboard.

We will look in depth at the responsibilities on Councils to make Public law decisions under the homelessness legislation and what that means as well as good practice in casework management.

Learning Outcomes

When you have completed this unit, you should understand:

• What you have to do to comply with the public law ‘golden rules’ when making inquiries, carrying out investigation that result in a decision.
• Good practice tips such as developing a client centred approach to managing a case effectively, and
• How to communicate effectively with the applicant
